Childrenwith Medical Conditions

At Tooting Primary School we will ensure thatchildren with medical conditions are well supported, and produce IndividualHealth Care Plans (IHCP) where appropriate, in line with Section 100 of theChildren and Families Act 2014. The act states that schools must makearrangements for supporting pupils at schools with medical conditions and in meetingthat duty, they must have regard to the statutory guidance issued by theSecretary of State in August 2017 in the document, Supporting Pupils at School With Medical Conditions

We will ensure that key staff are suitably trained, organising support if needed. Miss Dixon (Deputy Headteacher) or Mrs O’Reilly(SENCo) will liaise with relevant parties to write, implement and monitorIndividual Health Care Plans (IHCPs), supporting the children with specificneeds and support; making sure that all relevant staff are aware of a child’sneeds.

As a school we undertake risk assessments for schoolvisits, holidays, and other school activities outside of the normal timetable.

All Children must bring any medication to the schooloffice and parents/carers will be required to complete a form for it to beadministered during the school day. For more long term support, such as asthma, please supply a pump and complete the form which is in the school office.

We update our medical records every year and withevery new admission to Tooting Primary School.

Whatis an individual healthcare plan (IHCP)?

Individual healthcare plans can help to ensure thatschools effectively support pupils with specific medical conditions. Theyprovide clarity about what needs to be done, when and by whom. They will oftenbe essential, such as in cases where conditions fluctuate or where there is ahigh risk that emergency intervention will be needed, and are likely to behelpful in the majority of other cases, especially where medical conditions arelong-term and complex. However, not all children with a medical conditionwill require one.

If your child does not currently have an IHCP butyou feel they may need one, please contact the school office to arrange ameeting with Miss Dixon or Mrs O’Reilly.
